About the Neighborhood

The Rainier Valley of Seattle, Washington was formed by a receding glacier. It is the valley depression that runs southeast of downtown Seattle to Lake Washington, east of Beacon Hill and south of Mount Baker Ridge. Although there is no consensus on the region’s boundaries, we include the following ten neighborhoods as part of the Rainier Valley based on information from Seattle’s Department of Neighborhoods: Mount Baker, Rainier Vista, Columbia City, Seward Park/Lakewood, Hillman City, NewHolly, Brighton, Othello, Dunlap, and Rainier Beach. The city clerk’s office lists separate neighborhoods within the boundary, but the following neighborhoods are based on historic information and determined through discussions with a Neighborhood District Coordinator. For the purposes of this briefing packet, we have split up these ten neighborhoods into three main regions: North, Central, and South Rainier Valley
