About the Project

This website was created in fall 2015 by graduate students in the "Community Economic Development" course at the University of Washington, taught by Professor Joaquin Herranz Jr. In preparation for two class field trips, students were asked to produce briefing packets to provide an in-depth overview of the neighborhoods they would be visiting: Seattle's Chinatown-International District (CID) and Rainier Valley. Building off of work done by students in previous years, the fall 2015 class compiled and polished the content presented here on this website.

In addition to covering these neighborhoods' histories, demographic patterns, land use policies, and real estate trends, this website provides an analytic framework, the Quadruple Bottom Line, from which to assess the impact and role of the various organizations, businesses, projects, and public plans that serve the communities within these neighborhoods. We hope community members and others interested in the future of these neighborhoods find the information on this website useful and perhaps even educational.

Finally, while we have done our best to make sure all of the content on this website is factually accurate, we acknowledge that as students (many of whom do not live in either the CID or Rainier Valley), we can only offer one perspective on the neighborhoods we have studied. If you see something on this website that is incorrect, please contact Professor Herranz (jherranz[at]uw.edu) and we will do our best to correct it.
